Pilates vs. Yoga: Which is Best for Developing Strength & Tone?

In the Brisbane wellness scene, we’ve noticed a recurring question lately: Do you offer Pilates?

While SoHo Yoga remains a dedicated yoga sanctuary, we understand exactly why people are asking. Most students looking for Pilates are searching for a specific result: developing core strength & muscle tone. The Core Difference: Isolation vs. Integration. Both Pilates and Yoga are low-impact and focus on functional movement, but they approach strength building from different angles:

  • Pilates uses repetitive, isolated movements to target specific muscle groups often performed on reformers to provide resistance

  • Yoga employs an integrated mind-body approaching to building physical and mental strength, using body weight and sometimes light dumbbells for resistance training

The SoHo Solution: Vinyasa Strong & Yoga Sculpt

If you love the intensity of Pilates but crave the flow, breathwork, and philosophy of yoga, our Vinyasa Strong (Mondays at 6:00 pm) and Yoga Sculpt (Thursdays at 4.30pm) classes are your perfect middle ground.

Vinyasa Strong is an intermediate class designed for those seeking a more dynamic practice to build strength, stamina and flexibility. By holding challenging asanas and moving through powerful transitions, you utilise your own body weight and engage the deep stabilising muscles of the core and in a way that translates to both physical and mental strength and resilience in everyday life. Be prepared to be challenged and bring an open mind and a sense of humour!

Yoga Sculpt is a hybrid class blending Vinyasa yoga flows with strength training (using light dumbbells) and cardio bursts, specifically designed to build lean muscle and tone. While it is a physical workout, it maintains the mental focus of yoga and finishes with deep relaxation.
