While we are primarily known for our yoga in the Grange, we have a "secret weapon" on our timetable that helps our students progress faster than any other modality: Mat Pilates. Specifically, our Tuesday 4:30 pm session.
What is the "Powerhouse"?
In Pilates, the "Powerhouse" refers to the centre of the body, the area from the bottom of your ribs to the line across your hip joints. It includes the deep abdominal muscles, the lower back, the pelvic floor, and the muscles around the hips.
While yoga is fantastic for global strength and flexibility, Mat Pilates focuses on the isolated activation of these deep stabilisers. By learning to "fire" these muscles correctly, you create a solid foundation that makes every yoga pose feel lighter and more controlled.
Three Ways Pilates Levels Up Your Yoga
Enhanced Stability: A stronger core means less pressure on your wrists and ankles. You’ll find your "centre" much faster in standing balances like Tree Pose or Warrior III.
Spinal Protection: By strengthening the transverse abdominis (your natural "weight belt"), you protect your lower back during transitions and deep stretches.
Controlled Breath: Pilates emphasises lateral thoracic breathing, which can help you maintain core engagement even while taking deep, steady breaths, a vital skill for advanced Vinyasa.
