By the time March arrives, the "New Year energy" has often been replaced by the reality of a demanding workload and a mounting to-do list. As we reach the end of the first quarter, many Brisbane locals find themselves in a state of high-alert, tired, but "wired."
If you are struggling to switch off at night, you aren't alone. When the nervous system stays in a state of hyper-arousal for too long, your sleep quality is the first thing to suffer. This is where the therapeutic side of yoga becomes your greatest ally.
The Science of "Switching Off"
The reason we can’t sleep isn’t usually a lack of tiredness; it’s an overactive Sympathetic Nervous System (the "fight or flight" response). To fall into a deep, restorative sleep, we must activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System (the "rest and digest" response).
Yoga for sleep isn't about a workout; it is about "work-in." By using specific shapes and breathing techniques, we signal to the brain that the "threat" of the workday is over.
Three Poses for a Better Night’s Rest
While any yoga is beneficial, certain styles are specifically designed for sleep hygiene:
Restorative Yoga: Using bolsters and blankets to fully support the body, allowing the muscles to stop "holding" and the heart rate to slow down.
Yin Yoga: Targeting the deep connective tissues through long, still holds, which helps release the physical tension stored in the hips and lower back from sitting all day.
Yoga Nidra: Often called "yogic sleep," this guided meditation leads you into the state between wakefulness and sleep, providing the equivalent of several hours of rest in just 30 minutes.
Your Evening Sanctuary at the Grange
Our evening timetable at SoHo Yoga is designed to be a circuit breaker for your stress. Instead of scrolling through your phone until midnight, we invite you to join us for a 6:00 pm or later class to intentionally transition from "doing" to "being."
Whether it's a calming Yin session or a gentle flow, these classes act as a ritual of closure for your day. By the time you drive home through the quiet streets of the Grange, your body is already primed for the deep, restorative sleep you’ve been missing.
Meet Your Guide: Amanda Zdanowicz
Amanda Zdanowicz is a lead teacher at SoHo Yoga who specializes in nervous system regulation. She believes that a good night's sleep is a fundamental human right, not a luxury. In her evening yin classes, Amanda uses her knowledge of restorative techniques to help students decompress from the day's stressors. Her gentle guidance helps even the most "wired" minds find a sense of peace before their head hits the pillow.
